Blizzard of 2010

Blizzard of 2010, originally uploaded by Christopher Llewellyn Reed.

This was the view from my apartment window a few days ago, in case anyone wonders why Stevenson was closed all week. We had almost 6 feet of snow in a week!

And since, for Baltimore, that is highly unusual, it takes them a while to clear.

Still – we’re almost out from underneath the mess . . . sort of.

I’m looking forward to getting back to work next week.

Shovel on!

Come to the Stevenson “Foreigners Film Series,” Thursdays at 3:15pm, in the Dawson Academic Center, Room 10.  The series runs from February 4 to March 11.

The series features films that deal with themes of immigration, emigration and uprooting within non-American cultures.

The films, and their presenters, are:

The Italian February 4 Directed by Andrei Kravchuk, 2005

Presented by Christopher L. Reed

Days of Glory February 11 Directed by Rachid Bouchareb, 2006

Presented by Anne M. Kerns

Border Crossing February 18 Directed by Tin Dirdamal, 2005

Presented by Kjersti Teachman

Indochine February 25 Directed by Regis Wargnier, 1992

Presented by Anne M. Kerns

Nowhere in Africa March 4 Directed by Caroline Link, 2001

Presented by Virginia J. Polley

Brother March 11 Directed by Aleksey Balabanov, 1997

Presented by Christopher L. Reed

Hope to see you at some of these!

My apologies for being away for so long.

We are now in our third week of the Spring 2010 Semester.

I am teaching an Intro to Film class, in honor of which I post this photo of a 1950s 16mm film projector I purchased in September, 2009. I am also teaching a Video Production course and the Senior Project course.

I will soon have lots of photos from all of them.

Film on!

The Digital University

Welcome back to Stevenson!

Our Spring Semester begins on Tuesday, January 19.

On Thursday, January 13, we have our opening Faculty/Staff meeting – the first of the new decade.

The theme of the day is “The Digital University,” and we will discuss the future of education in this increasingly digital world.

Here is a link to the Stevenson University Library’s special page on this topic: Stevenson Library Guide to the Digital University

Enjoy!

It turns out, as I read a lot of media critics’ “best film” lists of the year,  that I haven’t seen that many of the truly important films of the year.  I’ve seen Avatar, at least, which was beautiful (but the story, itself, was too banal and derivative for me – loved the artistry of the effects, at least).

I guess I’ve been busier than I thought . . .

But I’ve seen enough films this past decade that I thought I would join the mania and list my 60 favorite films of the past 10 years.  I know, I know – why do it? Then again, why not?

Enjoy!

BEST MOVIES OF THE AUGHTS

And Happy New Year!

(Karen Crighton in "Hello Dowry")

The students in my Film Production class just completed their second project of the semester, shot on an ARRI-SRII Camera in Super 16mm B&W Film Format.

The film, entitled Hello Dowry, is an homage to 1940s film noir.  It can be viewed on the Film/Video website .

Here are the class’s credits on this project:

Nicole Myers: Writer/Director

Andrew Slick: Director of Photography

Justin Moe: Assistant Director/Editor

Corey Chaney: Assistant Camera

Michelle Rossignol: Location Sound/Sound Designer

Stephanie Yee: Gaffer

Omega All-Purpose Spray

Check out our new film on the Film/Video website !

Made by Derrick Bowen, Courtney Westphal and Kristen Westphal, as their final project for the VID222 class, this is a fun commercial for a crazy (fake) new product!

. . . at the Department faculty’s expense . . . but all in good fun:

Happy Holidays . . . (well, OK, the semester is almost over, but the holidays aren’t quite here yet; on the other hand, it is supposed to snow tomorrow!).

Cheers,

Chris
